Kontur.Class is a Learning Management System (LMS) designed for creating and managing online courses.
The platform started as a pilot project for Sechenov Medical University and later evolved into a standalone product for universities, companies, and individual learners. It works for both B2C and B2B, including higher education, corporate training, and continuing education programs

Goal
Goal
The main goal was to create an educational platform for international medical students. Students needed to first learn Russian and then transition to specialized medical subjects — all within a single learning environment

My Role
My Role
As the Sole Product Designer, I led the process from 0 to 1.
The key challenge was to design a flexible system that could:
support different types of learning content
work for multiple user roles
scale from a single institution into a global product

Users & Roles
Users & Roles
The platform was designed to support four distinct user roles, each with its own responsibilities and access levels

Unified interface across roles
Unified interface across roles
I designed a shared interface system where leaners and instructors use almost the same layout and navigation.
Role-specific actions change depending on permissions, while the overall structure remains consistent — keeping the system simple, predictable, and easy to learn

From Pilot to Product
After a successful pilot, the platform was rethought as a standalone product — Kontur.Class

What was already in place
What was already in place
By the end of the pilot, the core foundation of the platform was ready. Our team had a basic course structure and multiple content types, including lessons with text, files, and interactive elements.
This allowed us to validate the learning format early and confirm that users were comfortable with the overall structure of courses and lessons

User Research
User Research
At this stage, the platform had early customers who were familiar with other LMS platforms, but their specific needs and expectations were not fully clear. To turn this single-client solution into a scalable product, I conducted research with these first clients.
The goal was to map their end-to-end workflows and understand how they actually interact with learning tools. As a result, I identified three core scenarios that cover the full course lifecycle: organizing learning, creating a course and conducting training

The research highlighted several critical gaps, which I addressed through design and product initiatives:
introduced testing tools to support knowledge assessment
added statistics and progress tracking for instructors
enabled online lectures directly within the platform by integrating with Kontur.Talk, allowing meeting links to be created inside a course
These improvements helped transform Kontur.Class into a scalable, product-oriented platform for universities, companies training employees, and individual learners

Testing
Testing
Lessons already included different types of practice tasks, but there was no way to assess knowledge in a structured way — with time limits or clear pass criteria

I designed a dedicated testing format that can be added at the end of a lesson, topic, module, or the entire course:
instructors can configure time limits, passing score, number of attempts
leaners see clear results and understand whether they have successfully completed the module

Statistics
Statistics
To give instructors full visibility into the learning process, I designed a Statistics Dashboard. It helps them identify problem areas and support leaners who are falling behind.
Instructors can now:
analyze the funnel: see exactly where leaners drop off during the course
track progress: review detailed performance for every leaner
manage data: filter leaners by status or export the results to Excel for reporting

Integration with Kontur.Talk
To make learning experience seamless, we integrated Kontur.Class with Kontur.Talk, another product in the Kontur ecosystem

After the integration, instructors can schedule online meetings directly inside the course editor:
set a topic and description
pick a date and time
generate a meeting link automatically
Both instructors and leaners see the same meeting block inside the course, with a direct link to join the session in Kontur.Talk — no need to send links via external messengers

Design system
To keep the product consistent and scalable, I created a component library that became the foundation of the interface. It includes core UI components, layouts, and reusable patterns covering all key product scenarios

Results
The project successfully evolved from a university pilot into a commercial product.
Since the public launch, we have onboarded over 150 clients, including universities and corporate companies.
The scalable design system proved effective. It allowed the team to adapt the platform for these new customers and different use cases without major redesigns
